You don’t know what you don’t know; never was there a truer sentence ever spoken.

At Trident, we require clients to meet with us face-to-face (in person or virtually), twice per year. Why?  Face-to-face meetings provide dentists the opportunity to communicate the direction of their practice—to really explain their business realities in the current year. These meetings provide us an opportunity to share dental business insights based upon our experience with hundreds of other dentists, as well as provide tax planning catered specifically to each dental client. In our experience, this produces more effective tax strategies than can be had from relying solely on phone, email, or meeting once per year. In other words, bi-annual face-to-face meetings provide the greatest value to the dentist—they maximize the effectiveness of the client / CPA relationship.

Client feedback indicates that our dentists learn a lot about the business of dentistry and income taxes applicable to their practice through meetings with their Trident team. Most importantly, they report that these meetings create peace of mind.

We hate tax surprises. We believe our clients hate tax surprises, too, because every April and May, we pick up a few new clients, upset from the “surprise” tax bill they received from their tax preparer a few days before the deadline. Trident has developed a surprisingly easy and efficient method for helping dentists manage their taxes throughout the year. Our clients are able to streamline their dental practice cash flow and avoid tax underpayment penalties and interest.

We strive to make springtime tax return preparation as easy as possible for dentists. To that end, we collect client tax documentation in February.  We schedule the preparation of our clients’ tax returns in advance. As a result, our clients know when they can expect to review and file their completed tax returns. We only extend tax returns when appropriate or at our clients’ request.

Anecdotally, we have found that dentists who at least keep one eye on their books tend to make and save significantly more money than dentists who entirely ignore their practice financials. Accurate financial records are a critical part of dental business success, as is real-time access to practice financial data. We maintain our clients’ books in a dental-specific reporting format. Every client can access their practice financials through the Quickbooks Online platform at any time. We utilize our dentists’ up-to-date financial information throughout the year to advise clients on matters such as profitability, practice overhead, staffing metrics, dental supplies and lab costs, to name a few.

I’ve found that it’s easier to stay in shape than it is to get into shape.

We strive to be able to reasonably project any client’s taxable income for any given year by the 15th day of any given month. This year-round capability of projecting income taxes is made possible by our commitment to maintaining accuracy in our clients’ accounting throughout the year. Our experience demonstrates that we can evaluate a dental practice’s historical trends, current year results, and information gathered in face-to-face meetings, to reasonably project taxable income for any dental client for the current year.
